People of all ages receive most of their dental care from general dentists. Your mouth (your teeth, gums, and other structures) will likely be thoroughly examined, a professional cleaning performed, and your dental (and overall) health will likely be discussed during a routine visit to your family dentist. If an examination reveals tooth decay, the affected tooth will likely also need to be filled. Although common, these procedures are not the only ones your general dentist offers.
All general dentists have completed four years at an accredited dental school after completing their undergraduate studies. Additionally, they have met all requirements set forth by state licensing boards, including testing and continuing education requirements. Following their names are the initials DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) for some dentists and DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) for others. The only distinction between the two is the name given to their dental school diplomas; otherwise, their education and training are identical.
